FYI: David Bowie's Aladdin Sane will be reissued on June 24th as a two-CD deluxe edition featuring previously unreleased material. More on that as it develops...
Sigur Ros have released a follow-up to their 2002 album, ( ) on the DL. The new record, Hlemmur, is the soundtrack to a documentary by Olafur Sveinsson about a Reykjavik bus station and the homeless people who gather there. Sigur Ros sold Hlemmur at shows on their recent U.S. tour and plan a formal release in the future... thank God.
The Funk Brothers' documentary, Standing in the Shadows of Motown, will be released on DVD on April 22nd. The surviving members of the band are currently on tour with guests including Joan Osbourne and Bootsy Collins.
Morrissey (the dark horse behind the Smiths) pays homage to the New York Dolls, Patti Smith and Nico (among others) on a new compilation showcasing Morrissey's musical influences. The collection was put together for a new series of releases called Under The Influence, amassed by the same people who introduced the Back To Mine series. Morrissey's 15-track collection is released on May 27th here, the 26th in the UK. Tracklisting at the mo' fo' shizzle.
Media sluts Moby and Billy Bob Thornton will contribute stories to Jewel: An Intimate Portrait From Family and Friends, a new book due in June. The book is, according to Jewel's website, "shaped as a candid conversation." Hope it's better than the poetry.
Polyphonic Spree's twenty-four-person choral pop ensemble is at it again! The band, which has wrapped its second album, plans to mix it next month, with a release later this year. No title has been specified yet, but there's a tour @ the more...
Check out the video for "mOBSCENE", the first single off of Marilyn Manson's forthcoming album The Golden Age of Grotesque (May 13th). It's available here. Not to spoil anything for you, but the video is definitely better than the song.
Modest Mouse just lost its drummer of more than a decade. Jeremiah Green left the fold recently to devote more time to his new project The Vells, though the split hasn't been characterized as amicable. The remaining members are already working on their next LP (which could be out as early as September 1st) with hired hand Benjamin Wiekel of The Helios providing beats. Whatever.
On May 27th in Modena, Italy, U2's Bono and tenor Luciano Pavarotti will team up again for an undeniably worthy cause. The pair will share the stage in a benefit concert for Iraqi war refugees. This is not their first time doing this sort of thing; they performed together in similar fashion to benefit Bosnian children back in '95.
The original lineup of Slayer is once again back together. The band is set to return to the studio in the very near future to record their first album with drummer Dave Lombardo since Seasons in the Abyss in 1990. The delayed DVD Live at the Warfield, which was supposed to feature Lombardo's triumphant return, but doesn't, should hopefully arrive in June sometime. Oh yeah, and Lombardo was just freed up to work with Slayer again by fulfilling some commitments with Fantomas... he laid down drum tracks for the next two Fantomas albums (arriving separately though).
Ween is nearly ready to release its latest studio effort quebec. By "nearly", of course I mean, "as soon as they get a record contract". The group apparently broke company with Elektra after 2000's White Pepper and have yet to finalize a record deal with anyone else. quebec is to be 16 tracks long and was produced by Andrew Weiss. Dean Ween describes the album as, "heavy, dark, psychedelic and musically intricate at times, and musically really fucking cheap at times as well." In the meantime, if you're hungry for some Ween, relive how they took Pizza Hut for a ride. First go here. Then listen here and here. Enjoy.
Turn on your radio or hit up certain unnamed spots on the net specializing in music distribution (legal or otherwise).. Radiohead's first single (and apparently only official track off of Hail to the Thief any of us has yet heard), just hit the airwaves today. The song, of course, is "There There". You can catch Radiohead live at the Field Day Festival on the weekend of June 7th in the midst of a lineup that is more than impressive. Make it there if you can.
